Quick Jam: Danny Brown, “#ExpressYourself”

Danny Brown “#ExpressYourself” Digital Download When Lil’ Wayne declared himself the best rapper alive all the way back in 2008, it seemed totally ridiculous, and then over the next couple years, it just sort of became so. Though the prodigiously talented 32 year-old would never do it, with every successive track it’s getting harder and harder for me to find a rapper I’d rather listen to. This non-album track shows that the Detroit MC always goes hard, even on his throwaway tracks.

Hot Jams of the Day (04.11.13): The National, “Dont Swallow the Cap” & “Demons”

The National “Don’t Swallow the Cap”/”Demons” Trouble Will Find Me (out May 20 on 4AD) About a month before the all-conquering Brooklynites unleash their uber-anticipated sixth LP, we get some tasty hor d’oeuvres in the form of two of the album’s first three tracks. While the latter is exactly the kind of artful, impeccably crafted diet-dirge that characterizes large chunks of their spotty, slightly uneven 2010 release, High Violet, the former reminds us what has made them one of the two or …

Hot Jam of the Day (04.10.13): Empress Of, “Tristeza”

Posted on by TP1.COM in Hot Jam of the Day | Comments Off on Hot Jam of the Day (04.10.13): Empress Of, “Tristeza”

Empress Of “Tristeza” Systems EP (out now on Terrible Records) After releasing a string of devastating avant-pop singles, Empress Of’s Lorely Rodriguez finally unleashed her heady, warmly disorienting proper debut EP earlier this month. On this choppy, alluring cut, the Brookyln-based, LA-native embraces her Latin American roots and unwraps her quirky vocals over some undulating dollops of synth. The genre-bending youngster has been compared to myriad experimental vocalists (Julia Holter, Beach House’s Victoria Legrand, Julianna Barwick), and while she doesn’t quite sound like any of them, …

Stream/Download This Shit: SZA, S EP

SZA S EP Self-Released The 8-song debut EP from the self-described “Small town suburbinite” is anything but small. Over the 8 songs, SZA (né Solana Rowe) takes on myriad different genres (R&B, pop, psych, electronic) and crafts a sound all her own. Though she comes off shy in interviews, she bravely tackles topics love, loss, self-doubt and rejection with startling honesty and vulnerability. It’s her first of three EPs set to drop, and if they are half as strong as this …

Hot Jam of the Day (04.09.13): Postiljonen, “Supreme”

Postiljonen “Supreme” Digital Single (out now on Hybris) While the Air France comparisons are premature and frankly unfair, you can see where they come from. The dreamy trio effortlessly glides in their legendary countrymen’s Balearic jetstream, with the same celestial melodies, elegiac vocals, and youthful, nostalgic spirit. Many may have missed their brilliant 2012 singles (namely, the sweeping We Raise Our Hearts), but as long as the mercurial Swedes continues to weave these kind of wind-in-your-hair classics, the blogosphere is …

Hot Jam of the Day (03.18.13): Deborah Cox – “It’s Over Now” (Annie Starlight Edit)

Deborah Cox “It’s Over Now” (Annie Starlight Edit) Digital Single This classic, jilted-lover slow jam gets the gauzy R&B treatment, courtesy of anonymous Polish producer, Annie Starlight. Starlight’s sequined synth droplets deftly frame its protagonist’s wrath, performed by a particularly irate Deborah Cox. The undulating melody brilliantly adds to the tension of the original, resulting in a remix that feels simultaneously fresh and familiar.

Quick Jam: Baths, “Miasma Sky”

Baths “Miasma Sky” Obsidian (out 5/28 on Anticon) Check out the atmospheric new single from Baths — the project of LA-based producer Will Wiesenfeld. He seems to be continuing his shift from glitchy, disjointed dancefloor tracks to spacey avant-pop. Dig it.
